How to Install and Enable Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Role on Windows

In this document, we will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to install and enable Remote Desktop Services (RDS) role on Windows Server 2019/22 or Windows 10/11. For this procedure, the configuration must be performed only on the remote computer, i.e. the computer to which you want to connect.

RDS role Setup on Windows

In case the remote computer is running Windows Server 2019/22 you should install Remote Desktop Services role.

How to Install Remote Desktop Services role on Windows Server 2019/22

Install Remote Desktop Services role on the Remote Computer following these steps:
  1. On the search bar, type “server manager”. Open the Server Manager. 
  1. Once opened, click Add roles and features.

  1. On the Before You Begin page, click Next.
  1. Now, on the Installation Type page, make sure Role-based or feature-based installation is selected. Then click Next.

  1. Next, on the Server Selection page, select the server on which you want to install the role, and then click Next.

  1. On the Server Roles page, select Remote Desktop Services and click Next.

  1. Now, on the Features page, just click Next.

  1. Click Next again on the Remote Desktop Services page.

  1. On Role Services, select:
. Remote Desktop Session Host,
. Remote Desktop Virtualization Host,
then click Next.

  1. After that, the Add Roles and Features Wizard will display. Just click on Add Features.

  1. Now, click Install to add Remote Desktop Services.

  1. When the installation is finished, click Close, and then close the Server Manager window.
In case the remote computer is running Windows 10/11 you should enable Remote Desktop.

How to Enable Remote Desktop on Windows 10/11

Enable Remote Desktop on the Remote Computer following these steps:
  1. Click Start and open Settings.
  1. Then scroll down to Remote Desktop and open it.

  1. On the Remote Desktop area, set the switch to On. When done, close the window.
